FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Raw Silk
Often when we think of silk, we imagine a lustrous, smooth fabric used for clothing and sheets. In fact, there are dozens of different types of silk exist — mulberry, habotai, spider — and many different methods of processing it. Plus, there are several countries that produce silk, including China, India, and Thailand. Silk from one region will have unique properties from silk in a different region.
When it comes to China — where silk was born — “raw silk floss” is used to fill duvets and comforters. It means the silk is left in its raw, natural state to be hand stretched, rather than being uncoiled, spun, and woven into traditional fabrics. The raw silk is fluffy, soft, and lightweight as opposed to shiny and slippery.
KAILU raw silk duvets can last 15 to 20 years, if you treat them with care. We designed our duvets to include a removable duvet cover to protect the raw silk and to feel luxurious next to your skin. To clean, remove your duvet cover and machine wash it separately with lukewarm water and gentle detergent.
We never recommend machine washing or wet cleaning the raw silk core, as this will make the layers stick together, degrade the silk, and shorten the lifespan of your duvet.
Please read our Care instructions carefully to ensure your KAILU raw silk duvet maintains its unique qualities.
The KAILU Raw Silk Duvet features a single or dual core, allowing you to purchase your ideal weight and easily customize your duvet for warmer or cooler months. Our single core duvets are ideal for warmer climates and clients who sleep on the warmer side. Our dual core duvets are easily customizable for all four seasons: insert one raw silk core for summer, and two for winter. For more details on weight and what's included, go to Single vs. Dual Core Duvets and take our Quiz.
If you choose a single core duvet and then decide you need a dual core, we do allow returning customers to purchase one (1) additional raw silk core of the same size at a special price (equal to price of the dual core duvet minus the price of the single core duvet). So, it's as if you ordered a dual core duvet all along. Please note: additional shipping costs and sales taxes will apply.
Bedding sizes vary widely from brand to brand, and country to country. Please take a look at our duvet measurements before ordering.
Queen: 86 in. x 86 in.
King: 94 in. x 104 in.
Emperor: 98 in. x 110 in.
We recommend Emperor for a Cal-King bed, and Queen for a Full or Twin bed.
If you prefer a draped look or to tuck it under your mattress, we recommend choosing the next size up.
KAILU raw silk duvets can last 15 to 20 years if you treat them with care. We recommend ordering a Queen size duvet for a Twin bed. That way, your child's duvet can grow with him or her into adulthood, and we also reduce waste.
If your child is having accidents, we recommend buying our raw silk duvets later, when he or she is accident free. Exposing raw silk to water can degrade its unique protections, and make the raw silk clump and stick together.
Our raw silk duvets are made from the highest-grade, long-strand Mulberry silk. Less expensive silk duvets usually do not include duvet covers like ours do. Plus, they may contain less silk by weight and lower-quality silk such as "broken silk." Whereas KAILU raw silk is naturally white and stretched into layers, "broken silk" is brown in color, has a clumpy texture, and cannot be stretched into the same layers that make our raw silk duvets so smooth and luxurious.
Our cotton sateen duvet covers have a thread count of 376, but thread count is not a great way of determining quality. Instead, look at the weave. Cotton sateen has a classic four-over-one weave using cotton yarn in both warp and weft, making it soft and warm to the touch. We chose it for its crispness, slight sheen, and elegant drape.
Our raw silk duvets and throws are designed in San Francisco, California, U.S.A., and handmade in a family-owned workshop in the Yangtze River Delta — beginning of the maritime Silk Road and favorite silk region of the Qing Dynasty emperors and imperial court. It's located in the Zhejiang Province, southeast of Shanghai, China.
The proof is in our product: simply unzip your raw silk core to feel the finest, long-strand Mulberry silk, which can only come from silkworms fed with organic Mulberry leaves. If chemicals or other foods were introduced into their diets, they would produce raw silk that is rough, brown, and low-quality, and would never pass our farmers' exacting hand inspections. We believe only you can decide what's ethically and responsibly made, so instead of paying for certifications, we show you what happens on our farms and in our workshop and pass the savings onto you.
Our packaging includes reusable vacuum storage bags and decorative linen/cotton bags. If you're not using one of your raw silk cores, simply fold it, insert it into the vacuum storage bag, and remove the air with your vacuum cleaner. Small sized inserts may fit into the decorative linen/cotton bags without compression first.
When cooler weather comes around again, simply remove the raw silk core(s) from the vacuum storage bag or linen/cotton bag and re-fluff.
